Have you ever wondered why it is easy for some people to keep moving forward no matter how many bad things happen to them?

Well, it all has to do with a person's mindset.

Today we are talking about mindset and how different mindsets can help or hurt you in life.

What Is a Mindset?

Simply put, a mindset is a way of thinking.

Your mindset is your collection of thoughts and beliefs that shape your thought habits.

(I know you are thinking here we go again with this stuff about beliefs and values).

Your thought habits affect how you think, what you feel, and what you do. Your mindset impacts how you make sense of the world and how you make sense of yourself.

There are two types of mindset a person can have. They are a growth mindset or fixed mindset.

Do you know what type of mindset you have?

Fixed Mindset

A fixed mindset tends to believe they cannot develop their abilities, and they are born with whatever level of smarts they have.

A fixed mindset can be a roadblock that keeps you from achieving your goals or even believing that your goals are attainable.

A way of thinking identified as a fixed mindset is why put in the work if you don't believe the work will be worth the effort.

There have been times where I’ve had a fixed mindset. I didn’t have it because I thought doing things wasn’t worth the effort.

I had a fixed mindset because things were not happening in the time and fashion I thought they should occur.

I had to work to change my mindset from that of fixed to a growth mindset.

Growth Mindset

A growth mindset tends to believe you can grow and develop your skills and abilities.

Having a growth mindset, you are open to learning new things, trying harder, and seeking help and feedback.

A growth mindset can lead to success in many areas of your life.

Is it possible to change from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset?

The answer is yes. It takes a bit of retraining your mind and believing that you can put in the effort needed to grow and develop.

How Is A Mindset Formed?

As most of us know, mindset develops during childhood.  These mindsets evolve because we absorb the philosophies of those we spend the most time with.

Because we didn’t know any better, we had no idea whether or not these mindsets would help or hurt us.

Those mindsets of our family, friends, and caregivers become embedded in us until we have experiences that contradict those mindsets.

As a child, when surrounded by people who have a growth mindset, chances are you will have a growth mindset because you are used to seeing people believe in themselves and continuing to develop.

The same can be valid for being surrounded by people who have a fixed mindset.

Each mindset has benefits and disadvantages, but I believe the best type of mindset to have is a growth mindset.

The growth mindset opens up the world and all the possibilities it has to offer to live the life you desire, and of course, that is the goal we all want to reach.
